Fortnite is moving to Unreal Engine 5. The changes are, well, unreal

Fortnite gets a pretty big upgrade with Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine 5 is, well, a big deal. If you've seen the tech demos, you know how this enhanced game engine can push the limits of graphical fidelity and technical prowess. It's a feat that so impressed Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeny that he was convinced to implement the technology in Fortnite.

Nor is he alone in this movement. With Unreal Engine 5 in Early Access, tons of developer teams are jumping on the bandwagon. Gears of War has already shown what they are capable of with the help of the engine. But more often than not, these projects only serve as demonstrations. These are not finished products. But if anyone can make Unreal Engine 5 run so fast, it's Epic Games and its VBucks-lined bottomless pockets.

This upgrade coincides with Fortnite Chapter 3, a new era for the game and the Fortnite brand. It comes with a new map, a new Marvel crossover, new game mechanics, and a new battle pass. Some players were suspicious of the stability issues at the time of the upgrade, but very few of those fears ever surfaced. The update is no longer a rumor, it's live. Players seem to like the changes, Unreal Engine 5 gets to work.

Upgrading something like Fortnite is no small feat either. The game exists on just about every major platform, Epic Games wants its flagship title to be as accessible as possible. And that means running Unreal Engine 5 smoothly on a wide range of system specs – mobile devices included. But Unreal came prepared and, for the most part, succeeded. This kind of industry support is hard to come by and will make other game studios much more likely to use the engine in the future.
