Questions regarding age verification on Roblox have been circulating throughout this year, but on September 21, 2021, Roblox provided some much-requested answers. The age verification process will be completely optional, however, those who choose to opt out of the verification system will not be able to participate in certain content on the platform, including the upcoming voice chat feature.

Since nearly half of Roblox's player base is made up of users over the age of 13, how to properly handle the safety of younger users has remained a concern. In a recent blog post, Roblox said the Space Voice feature will only be available to those who have verified they are over 13 years old. By doing so, Roblox believes it protects the platform's most impressionable users from potentially inappropriate attacks. content or experiences unsuitable for younger audiences.

Roblox has made it clear that it prioritizes user privacy and that any personal data of players who wish to verify their age, such as ID or driver's license, will not be stored.

Note: Age verification is currently in beta, with a full release planned for fall 2021, along with spatial voice chat. Some users will have the option to verify their age in their account settings now by clicking here, while others will have to wait for the site-wide release.

How it works

In order to verify your age on Roblox, you will need the Roblox app, as access to a phone camera is required. Users can simply take a picture of their driver's license, passport, or ID card, which will then be scanned by Roblox's photo processor for authentication. Once this analysis is complete, users will be asked to take a selfie to prove “liveliness” and “likeness”.

Photos from a camera roll will not be allowed due to their more static nature, so be prepared to put your photo in front! Roblox uses "liveliness" to ensure that you are a living, breathing person, no matter how stupid it may seem, and "likeness" to verify that you are the same person who appears in your submitted photo. The whole shooting process shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Although age verification is a very necessary process in many cases, questions arise as to the extent of Roblox's system, as they require all IDs to be government issued. This leaves unanswered questions about how those who live in areas where it is more difficult to obtain government ID, or who do not yet have access to ID as a minor, can prove their age on the site. As this feature is still new at the time of this article's publication, answers may be forthcoming from Roblox as development and extended releases continue through Fall 2021.
