To avoid zombies in Project Zomboid you will need to practice stealth and patience as rushing can quickly lead to bad situations. If you want to use stealth to avoid zombies, press the c key to sneak.

When sneaking around, be sure to take cover to avoid being spotted by zombies. Sneak along fences and around the sides of buildings, forests are some examples of cover to use in the game.

Another trick to use when sneaking around is to survey your area before heading there. You can search by pressing the right mouse button and moving the cursor in a direction.

This will move your camera outward, allowing you to see what's ahead. If you have a line of sight that is not blocked by anything, you can often see groups of undead before alerting them.

For this reason, it is beneficial to use this tactic, as Alert Zombies tend to move closer to your location. If you alert more than one zombie, you can quickly be overwhelmed and murdered on the spot.

How to Avoid Alerting Zombies in Project Zomboid

To avoid alerting zombies in Project Zomboid, you will need to avoid making noise and being spotted by them. Zombies can spot you from a distance of 20 squares.

To avoid getting a spot at this distance, we recommend using the stealth and recon tactics we talked about earlier. But to avoid making noise, you will have to avoid running, breaking windows or doing anything that makes noise.

Shooting guns is an example of this because the guns in this game are loud and the zombies will rush towards the sound. For this reason, guns are best used as a last resort or if you get stuck.

How to avoid zombies in buildings and bases in Project Zomboid

If you're inside a building, you can avoid attracting attention by following the steps we recommended earlier.

  • Avoid making loud noises
  • Do not run
  • Don't Get Spotted

You don't have to worry as much about being spotted inside buildings unless zombies are already inside. However, if you see windows, you should cover them because the zombies can see through them and spot you.

To cover the windows you will need a sheet which you can make using your tailoring skills. Don't worry if you haven't unlocked the sewing skill, because you can still loot houses for curtains that turn into sheets.

Either way, we strongly recommend that you only use the overlay window option in your base, as it is impractical to overlay windows in any old building.

How to Avoid Already Alerted Zombies in Project Zomboid

If you are spotted, the best thing to do is to cut the line of sight long enough for them to stop following you. You can stop them from following you by ducking behind walls, using fences and cars to block their view.

You also have to wait a few seconds behind an object for zombies to move to your last known location.

If there is a large horde on your tail, you can smash the horde by moving through a forest. The forest won't stop the zombies from following, but will slow them down, so you need to keep moving forward.

We recommend going as far as possible while breaking the line of sight. You'll eventually lose all alerted zombies if you're both far away and out of sight long enough.
