Best light sources in Minecraft

Minecraft has had many cool additions in the light department over the years. But, the days when the only source of light was a torch are long gone.

Torches

Ah, yes, the torch. An old classic that remains the most used light source in the game. It's very cost effective and does its job of brightening up dark areas and preventing hostile mobs from spawning.

There can be many variations of torches, you don't need to just place them on the wall or on the floor. You can be a little more creative. One idea is to put it on a wall and decorate it with an object frame and put an anvil or fence in said object frame for a hanging torch effect.

Lanterns

Lanterns are one of the newest additions to the Minecraft world. They look great and also come in two variations: the classic yellow light (Lantern) and the blue light (Soul Lantern).

You can either put them on the floor or hang them from the ceiling. The chains are also an excellent extension for hanging lanterns on different verticalities.

Lamps

Lamps are light sources primarily created by players. In the days when we didn't have lanterns, people used their imagination and creativity to create lampposts or various types of original lighting to brighten up their buildings.

One idea was to take an entire square light block, usually Glow Stone (but later other light blocks like the Sea Lantern), and place it high up. Then the lamp can be surrounded by various decorative items like hatches, fences, fence gates, knobs, etc.

A similar idea comes in the form of floor lighting. It all started with lava flowing under the ground and creating a glass floor in your home. We've all been there, it was cool back then. Later, this idea evolved with an impressive interaction with carpets.

You can place a light source block, such as a light stone or a torch, on the ground and cover it with a rug to brighten the area. But the light source itself is actually hidden. It can match the surrounding color scheme for better effect.

End rods

End rods are a very unusual light source only found in the end but can be used in a variety of builds. Many players rely on End Rods to create some kind of street lamp or industrial lighting. The most popular idea is to combine End Rod with Dragon Egg, which creates a beautiful lamp (shown in the image above). It also works very well as lamps in a laboratory or a factory thanks to its white color.

Feu

Fire is another light source that has been around in the game for a very long time. I'm not a fan of using it on its own, but combining it with building skills gives you a pretty decent fireplace that lights up the whole room in your block house.
