Minecraft Brewing and Potions Guide | All Minecraft Potion Recipes

As with many games, potions add a certain flair and fun to Minecraft, but also add a complicated hierarchy of recipes to memorize. The upside (or for some, the downside) is that all potions must be crafted using specific recipes, and there's no mixing or matching necessary to see what other potions you can create. .

Minecraft Brewing and Potions Guide | All Minecraft Potion Recipes

Since all Minecraft potions follow specific recipes and steps, brewing them is a fairly straightforward process. With the exception of the potion of weakness (which is explained at the end of this guide), four basic items are needed for all of them: a brew stand, a water bottle, and a nether wart and a powder of fire . We will first walk you through how to use these items to start your potion. Further down the guide you will find the recipes for all the potions.

How to brew

In this part of the guide, we'll explain the two basic steps to brewing a clumsy potion, which is the basic mix needed for most potions. Once you have completed this part of the guide, you will understand the basics of brewing. If you already know how to brew and just need the recipes, skip to the Recipes section below.

The Brewing Booth

In the image above on the left you will see our brewing stand. This is where you'll perform all of your in-game alchemy. On the right, you'll see the recipe for crafting the Brew Stand, which only includes three cobblestones and a fire stick.

This is your first step in brewing. Craft the brewing stand and place it wherever you want. We placed it in the grass outside – for fresh air, of course. Brewing potions can make the air musty.

The clumsy potion

Now it's time to take the rest of the ingredients mentioned above to make a clumsy potion. The image above shows you the location of all the materials inside the brew stand. Open the brew stand by pressing the secondary action button/key.

Place the firepowder in the top left slot. It will automatically disappear and you will notice that the fuel bar in the brew stand is now full. It's fuel for brewing. Once this bar is empty, you will need another Firepowder to make more potions.

Place the water bottle(s) into the bottom slots. For the sake of efficiency, it is strongly recommended to put three bottles at a time. You can make just one or two, but the fuel burns at the same rate each time.

Finally, place the Nether Wart in the slot on top. As soon as all the objects are in place, the brewing stand will begin to animate its brewing process. You can use the bar to the left of the Nether Wart to determine how far away this infusion is. Once it fills up completely, you'll see that the water bottles have become clumsy potions!

This is the basic process of brewing. Going forward, you will still use the same process and materials except for the Nether Wart. The nether wart is only used once to make the clumsy potion. To make the different potions in Minecraft you will need to place different ingredients in the top slot.

Potion of Weakness: As mentioned above, the Potion of Weakness is the only exception to the rule about brewing potions. Instead of using a Nether Wart on the water bottle, you'll use a Fermented Spider's Eye first. This will turn all water bottles into potions of weakness. This recipe is explained in the list of recipes below.

Recipes

Minecraft Brewing and Potions Guide | All Minecraft Potion Recipes

As stated above, you'll almost always need a clumsy potion as a base for any of these potions, with the exception of the potion of weakness. You will still use the above process to brew your potions with each of the ingredients listed below.

All potions are listed below in alphabetical order, depending on whether they are basic potions (require one special ingredient) or advanced potions (require more than one special ingredient). You must start each of the recipes below with a goofy potion. Once you have the clumsy potion(s), you need to place the below mentioned ingredients in the top slot of the brewing stand.

The following potions can be considered alternate versions of the potions listed above. You'll need to brew one of the above potions first, then modify it with a Fermented Spider's Eye. You can modify potions by placing them where you would normally place the water bottle in the brew stand and then adding new ingredients.

      • Sugar (makes potion of haste)
      • Fermented Spider's Eye

    • Ingredients
      • Sparkling Melon (makes Healing Potion)

Increased potion potency or effect duration

Some potions can be modified to increase the duration or potency of their effects. It's a simple process, but you can only increase one or the other, not both.

Potion length extension

Minecraft Brewing and Potions Guide | All Minecraft Potion Recipes

To extend the duration the potion affects you, you will add redstone dust as the next ingredient in the potion. The following potions may have their time increased if you brew them with redstone dust.

  • Regeneration Potion: Doubles the duration that regeneration affects the player. It does not affect the speed of the regeneration. This means that you will regenerate 18 hearts over time, instead of just nine hearts.
  • Potion of Speed: Increases time from three to eight minutes.
  • Potion of Fire Resistance: Increases time from three to eight minutes.
  • Night Vision Potion: Increase time from three to eight minutes.
  • Potion of Strength: Increases time from three to eight minutes.
  • Jump Potion: Increases time from three to eight minutes.
  • Water Breathing Potion: Increases time from three to eight minutes.
  • Potion of Invisibility: Increases time from three to eight minutes.
  • Potion of Slow Fall: Increases time from one minute and 30 seconds to four minutes.
  • Poison Potion: Doubles the duration that poison affects the player. It does not affect the speed. This means you will lose 36 cores over time, instead of just 18 cores.
  • Potion of Weakness: Increases time from one minute and 30 seconds to four minutes.
  • Potion of Slowness: Increases time from one minute and 30 seconds to four minutes.
  • Potion of the Turtle Master: Increase time from 20 to 40 seconds.

Potion Power Extension

Minecraft Brewing and Potions Guide | All Minecraft Potion Recipes

To extend the power the potion affects you, you will add Glowstone Dust as the potion's next ingredient. This will usually also shorten the duration the potion affects you. The following potions may have their time increased if you brew them with glowstone dust.

  • Regeneration Potion: Regenerates nine hearts over 22 seconds, up from 45 seconds.
  • Potion of Swiftness: Increases speed by 40% and increases field of vision. Decreases time from three minutes to one minute and 30 seconds.
  • Potion of Healing: Instantly restores four hearts of health.
  • Potion of Strength: Increases melee damage by three hearts. Decreases time from three minutes to one minute and 30 seconds.
  • Jump Potion: Further increases jump height and reduces fall damage. Decreases time from three minutes to one minute and 30 seconds.
  • Poison Potion: Poisons 18 hearts over 22 seconds instead of 45 seconds. Will not reduce health below half a heart.
  • Potion of Slowness: Reduces speed by 60%. Decreases time from one minute and 30 seconds to 20 seconds.
  • Potion of Evil: Instantly deals six hearts of damage.
  • Potion of the Turtle Master: Slows the player by 90% and reduces damage taken by 80%. Does not decrease original potion time.

Splash Potions and Lingering Potions

The last thing to know about potions is that you can craft them into splash potions and lingering potions. These are variations of the original potions that are cast to cause effects on players who are within their range of effect.

splash potion

Minecraft Brewing and Potions Guide | All Minecraft Potion Recipes

Splash potions can be cast and create an area of effect that affects all players and creatures within range. Any potion can be made into a splash potion by adding gunpowder as the next ingredient. Once cast, the potion shatters and cannot be retrieved.

The duration of the effect depends on the distance between the entity and the potion when it breaks. If the potion splashes directly on the player, it lasts for the duration of the potion. If the entity is two blocks away from the splash (the splash can be up to four blocks), then it lasts for 50% of the normal duration.

Lingering Potion

Minecraft Brewing and Potions Guide | All Minecraft Potion Recipes

Splash potions can be cast and create an area of effect that persists for a period of time. Any player or mob that enters the lingering potion's area of effect will begin to absorb some of its power. Any potion can be made into a splash potion by adding Dragon's Breath as the next ingredient. Dragon's breath should be brewed into a splash potion, not a normal potion.

Lingering Potion starts with a 3 block radius and decreases to 0 block over 30 seconds. If a player steps into the area of effect, the potion's effects are applied for a quarter of the time of the potion's normal duration, and the lingering potion's radius immediately decreases by half a block.

If the potion has no duration and instead causes instant effects, the potency of the effect is half the potion's standard potency.

This covers everything you need to know about potions and their recipes. We'll update it when new potions are added or mechanics change, so be sure to check back with every major update!
