Where to find axolotls in Minecraft

Like glowing goats and squids, the axolotl was also added with the recent 1.17 update for Minecraft, and these creatures are a bit hard to find, similar to the glowing squid.

Nevertheless, you can find axolotls spawning in underwater caves and deep parts of the ocean, mostly from Y=63, so if you want to catch yourself an axolotl, start there.

We recommend bringing Water Breathing Potions and an Enchanted Breathing Helmet to help you search for the axolotl.

In addition to these two items, you will first need a few items. The main thing you will need to get an axolotl is an iron bucket filled with water. You can craft an Iron Bucket with three Iron Ingots, as shown in the pattern shown below.

After crafting the bucket, you'll need to fill it with water as needed to pick up the axolotl, as you can't really bring it home like a cow or a sheep.

That said, once you get an axolotl, you can breed it using a Tropical Fish Bucket. You can get buckets of tropical fish from the various peddlers in the game for five emeralds.
